Five Easy Fixes for Interview Nightmares for Executives

As if the interview process isn't nerve-wracking enough, we all know Murphy's Law has it in for us during our most important hour—whatever can go wrong, will go wrong. Instead of leaving things up to chance, it's best to avoid the following situations by being prepared, but in the off-chance that one of these things happened to you right now on a way to an interview, first we'd like to express our condolences. Next, we'd like to show you how to get out of an interview pickle looking cool as a cucumber. Here's how.

I'm On My Way to an Interview and I'm Lost

How to Avoid: Do a dry run getting to and from the interview site during your free time. Try to make the commute during the hours you will be interviewing to properly adjust for traffic, train/plane schedules, etc. While this isn't always the most convenient or economical option, it certainly is the best.

How to Fix: If you're already on your way there and have the interview in a few minutes, chances are you've already tried Google Maps or HopStop (if you haven't, try those!). Try calling a cab if possible or in the worst case scenario, first send and email and then call your contact point at the site to let them know that you're running late. Do this as soon as you know you'll be late.

I Just Spilled Coffee/Tea/Breakfast/Anything on my Shirt

How to Avoid: Eat at home before getting dressed. Don't grab something on the go—plan your interview day with the proper amount of time to get everything done without rushing, including eating your breakfast/lunch and drinking your morning cup of joe. Keep a laundry detergent stick, baby wipes or Shout Wipes in your briefcase or carrying device. If you're driving, put them in the glove box. The day before your interview, place a spare shirt in the backseat of your car (or spare suit on a hanger if you're accident prone).

How to Fix: If you failed to do all of this, pull out your smartphone, Google the closest store where you can buy clothes and get to it! Never show up dirty and never let them see you sweat!

What Happens if I Forget to Bring My Resume to an Interview?

How to Avoid: Download Print Hammermill on your mobile phone and upload your resume to your device. This lets you print anything that you want from your tablet, smartphone or mobile device. Simply send it to any WiFi enabled printer. You should also upload your resume to your iCloud and Dropbox so you can access it from any device.

How to Fix: Hopefully you avoided this one. When all else fails, fess up, show them your LinkedIn page and email them your resume as soon as you leave the office.

I Forgot to Tell My Interviewer That I ________!

How to Avoid: Aside from jotting notes, make mental notes on your talking points and practice your interview with a friend or colleague.

How to Fix: Send a thank you note to the interviewer via email. In it, just don't thank them, bring up anything you forgot to mention or clear up anything you felt wasn't clarified during the interview.

Executive Employers Review

Guest Review: Submitted by Former Colleague from KPMG

Executive Employers Review

I’m a senior executive of my own consulting firm who has used many job platforms in recent years, to expand my horizons online. In the past I have tried both execunet.com and theladders.com, and although they were both pleasant experiences, neither compare to the success I have had using https://www.executiveemployers.com.

Executiveemployers.com is a well-organized database that allowed me to easily network with professional recruiters in my field. Through my profile I was able to contact and communicate with dozens of recruiters, which opened up opportunities for personal relations that aren’t always easily created online.

My main page of the site featured stats that helped me project reachable employment goals. I was given the tools needed to judge my own success of my like-ability online. I was able to upload my own personal resume, rather than having to use other sites pre-formatted resume-style pages. For some executives I feel the pre-formatted resumes allow them to compete on an equal level with other professionals, so I’d like to see this aspect added to executiveemployers.com as well as continuing their online resume format. Having both available would allow employers to compare resumes efficiently- as they would be set up in a similar matter and organized in a way that makes them convenient to compare. I feel this would give people with more experience an edge, over the ones who simply ‘prep up’ their resumes in an attempt to outshine experience with innovative designs. This is an aspect I appreciated in other sites, and would like to see implemented on this one as well.

While searching for jobs, I was impressed by how many available positions were listed on this site. The search results can be limited down as specifically or generically as you’d like, which allows for great opportunity in finding ‘the right position’. In terms of location, you can search anywhere from locally in your own city- to worldwide. You can search by salary, ensuring you are not looking through jobs you may find worthwhile, but don’t pay the intended amount you feel they are worth. You can also limit searches according the employers specifics, which allows you to pre-determine whether or not you would be fit for the job. In terms of requirements you can limit the searches by everything from education to experience needed to apply. You can also find consulting jobs, board and advisory roles, and joint venture opportunities, to ensure you are not simply covering job listings, but every possible career you’re qualified for.

Compared to other sites of a similar nature, Executiveemployers.com promotes a sense of education in the fact that they have an extensive amount of information available for executives to use. Their resource center allows you to optimize your job search experience in a convenient and professional manner. The site gives you tips on creating your own career plan and reaching your financial and business-oriented goals.

But the part of this site I was most impressed with was their 24 hour online support, which is comprised of extremely friendly and helpful support staff, who are ready to answer all of your questions in detail. I was never disappointed in the answers I received from support staff and appreciated their quick and informative responses- all of which helped me use their site more efficiently and effectively. They also have phone support, during business hours, which is yet another great feature that makes them stand apart from the rest.

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience using Executiveemployers.com and will continue to remain an active member on their site. I’d highly recommend it for people in the executive world, looking for an online job search engine that provides a professional and unique atmosphere geared towards creating a beneficial relationship between employers and executives.
